Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the gross anatomy, structural organization and major landmarks of the brain and spinal cord, and describe the primary relationships between cortex and subcortical structures (PLOs 1 and 2).
  2. Apply knowledge of functional anatomy to typical clinical presentations (PLO 3).
  3. Translate information about neuroanatomy for a non-expert audience in a clear and engaging way (PLOs 6 and 7).

Week 1, Lectures 1 and 2: Overview of the Nervous System

Neurodevelopment, central nervous system vs. peripheral nervous system, meningeal coverings, and the ventricular system.

Week 2, Lectures 1 and 2: Spinal Cord and the Organization of Tracts

Meningeal coverings, blood supply, organization of white matter, and the organization of grey matter.

Week 3, Lectures 1 and 2: Descending Tracts: The Motor System.

Anterior and lateral corticospinal tracts, innervation of limbs vs. innervation of core, and the UMN vs. LMN.

Week 4, Lectures 1 and 2: Ascending Tracts: The Sensory System.

Anterolateral system, posterior columns, medial lemniscus system, and sensory processing from the PNS to the Cortex.

Week 5, Lectures 1 and 2: Brainstem 1: Overview and Cranial Nerves

Development and organization of the brainstem, arrangement of cranial nerves, control of eye movements.
